The opening deal: a pair of aces, with the positions 1 to 5 under the cards for the draw.
After discarding 1 2 3, the draw makes four aces, and WOPR stands pat.
The showdown: WOPR’s jack-high flush against four aces, and you win the pot of 102.

How to play

  • Each hand costs an ante of 1 chip. WOPR deals the first hand. After that, the deal passes to the other player each hand. The player who is not dealing acts first.
  • Bets are 5 before the draw and 10 after it. Each round has at most a bet and three raises. Answer CHECK OR BET? or CALL n, RAISE OR FOLD?.
  • At DISCARD (1-5, OR NONE): discard up to three cards. Give them by position (1 3 5 or 135) or by name (7H KD). NONE, or an empty line, keeps all five.
  • A second round of betting follows the draw, then the showdown. The better hand takes the pot, and equal hands split it.
  • At ANOTHER HAND? press Enter to deal, or type LEAVE to cash out. The game ends when either side cannot pay the ante.

Tips for winning

  • Bet before the draw when you have a good hand. WOPR folds most hands weaker than a pair of sevens to a bet. The exceptions are when it is bluffing, and when it holds four cards of one suit.
  • Draw the way the odds say. Keep a pair and draw three. Draw one to four cards of a flush, or of a straight open at both ends. Otherwise keep your two highest cards.
  • When you drew no cards, WOPR plays its hand as weaker after the draw. So standing pat can make it fold. But it always calls a bet that is a quarter of the pot or less. So a bluff only works in a small pot.
  • WOPR bluffs about one hand in eight. A bluffing WOPR sometimes stands pat on nothing. A raise from a WOPR that stood pat is not always a strong hand.
