The first hand is a black jack: an ace and a king win $15 on a $10 bet.
A pair of eights split into two hands against the dealer’s 6. WOPR asks about HAND 1 first.
The dealer draws the QC and busts. The doubled first hand wins $50 and the second $25, for $200.

How to play

  • Get closer to 21 than the dealer, but not more than 21. Number cards count their number, faces count 10, and an ace counts 1 or 11. An ace and a ten-count card as your first two cards is a black jack. A black jack pays 3 to 2.
  • At YOUR BET: type a whole number of dollars from 1 to 25. Press Enter on an empty line to bet the same as last time.
  • Then type H to hit (take a card) or S to stand. The prompt also offers D to double down and P to split when your hand and your money allow them.
  • Doubling down doubles your bet and gives you exactly one more card. Splitting turns a pair of the same rank into two hands, once a round. Split aces get one card each.
  • The dealer checks for black jack when it shows an ace or a ten-count card. The dealer draws to 17 and stands on soft 17.
  • Type LEAVE at YOUR BET: to cash out. The game also ends when you have less than $1.

Tips for winning

  • Stand on 13 to 16 when the dealer shows a 2 to 6. Hit 13 to 16 when the dealer shows 7 or higher. The dealer must draw to 17, so a low card showing often means it busts.
  • Double down on 11, and on 10 unless the dealer shows a ten-count card or an ace.
  • Always split aces and eights. Never split tens or fives.
  • WOPR does not shuffle the deck every hand. It deals from one deck until fewer than 15 cards remain, then says WOPR SHUFFLES THE DECK. When many tens and aces remain in the deck, bet more.
