Air-to-Ground Actions

Air-to-Ground Actions

A six-sortie air campaign: twelve aircraft against six defended targets. Each sortie sends one package at one target. WOPR scrambles interceptors and fires its SAM sites. It also hides a mobile SAM battery where it expects your next raid.

The opening status: six targets with their value, damage and SAM sites, and the target-area map. It also shows WOPR’s 4 interceptors and the default package.
Sortie 1 at the radar: SEAD destroyed both of its SAM sites, and two strike aircraft scored two hits. The map reads DIRECT HIT ON 5.
Sortie 2: the mobile SAM battery waited at the command bunker. Three strike aircraft reached the bunker and destroyed it for 4 more points, 6 of the 10 needed.

How to play

  • Destroy targets worth 10 points within six sorties to win. With 6 to 9 points the campaign is a draw, and with fewer it is a loss. Lost aircraft are not replaced. If you lose all twelve, you lose the campaign.
  • At PACKAGE: set the package, then type GO. You can type TARGET, STRIKE, SEAD and ESCORT on one line (TARGET 5 STRIKE 4 SEAD 2 ESCORT 2). The line may end with GO. Any setting you do not type keeps its last value.
  • A sortie goes in this order. Each escort ties up one interceptor. The other interceptors attack your strike and SEAD aircraft. Your SEAD aircraft attack the target’s SAM sites. The remaining SAM sites fire at the strike aircraft. The remaining strike aircraft bomb the target.
  • The table shows each target’s VALUE, its DAMAGE against the hits it needs (0/2), and its SAM sites. Destroying the RADAR halves SAM fire. Destroying the AIRFIELD grounds the interceptors. Destroying the FUEL DEPOT stops WOPR replacing its interceptors.
  • STATUS shows the targets again. HELP shows the commands. END ends the campaign.

Controls

You typeWhat it does
TARGET 5 or TARGET RADARchoose the target by number or by a word of its name
STRIKE 4strike aircraft, which bomb the target (at least one)
SEAD 2aircraft that attack the target’s SAM sites
ESCORT 2fighters that tie up WOPR’s interceptors
GO (or FLY, LAUNCH)fly the package. GO may end the line that sets the package
STATUS (or MAP, TARGETS)show the targets and the target-area map
HELP (or an empty line)show the commands
END (or STOP, RTB)end the campaign and score it
Esc, Escleave the game and return to WOPR

Tips for winning

  • Send one escort for each interceptor WOPR has (the status shows how many). Each interceptor that no escort ties up stops almost one of your strike or SEAD aircraft. When the escort on your last sortie outnumbered the interceptors, WOPR usually keeps them on the ground.
  • Send one SEAD aircraft for each SAM site at the target. Send one more if the mobile battery may be there. Each site that still fires stops almost one strike aircraft.
  • Hit the RADAR first. It needs only one hit. Once it is gone, every SAM site fires at half strength.
  • The MARSHALLING YARD has no SAM sites, so strike aircraft there hit two times in three. But it needs three hits.
  • The mobile SAM battery usually waits at the target you raided last, if it still stands. Otherwise it usually waits at the most valuable target left. Change targets to dodge it.
